Having a great butt can give men and women pride in their bodies and give them the confidence to wear swimsuits and snug clothing. Unfortunately, for many prospective plastic surgery patients, the appearance of the butt is not where patients want it to be. Some patients may desire a fuller and shapelier backside, while others feel that the butt is too large and misshaped. The good news is that there is a solution for all of these problems. Butt augmentation and reduction procedures can be performed to change the appearance of the derriere.
Gluteal Augmentation Procedures
The following procedures can be performed to enlarge the size and shape of the glutes.
Gluteal (butt) implants: Butt implants are larger in size and flatter in shape than breast implants. When placed in the butt, the implants give the cheeks additional volume. The advantage of gluteal implants is that the treatment is permanent that is, the butt will retain its enlarged shape as long as the implants last. Butt implants are not intended to last a lifetime, and may need to be replaced in as little five or as many as 15 years.
Fat transfer to the glutes: If the patient has enough fat on another area of the body (such as the stomach or thighs), it can be extracted from the body via the liposuction procedure. This harvested fat is then purified. The fat can be injected into another area of the patient’s body, such as the buttocks. The advantage of this approach is that it offers a natural feel. The downside of this technique is that, once injected, some of the fat dissipates and does not hold its form. This can make it more difficult to achieve the desired results.
Gluteal Reduction Procedures
While there has certainly been a large number of patients who have opted to undergo butt augmentation procedures such as the placement of implants or fat transfer, there is also a large patient base that desires to reduce the size of the butt. Gluteal reduction procedures include:
Liposuction: Performed for decades, liposuction is still the most effective fat removal technique available today. Fortunately, advances in liposuction have improved. During liposuction, the plastic surgeon inserts a small, tube-like device into the body. The tube suctions fat right out of the body. Liposuction can be performed to remove fat from the butt. However, patients will have to maintain an exercise regimen to prevent the fat from returning.
Excision of lax skin: As patients age or lose large amounts of weight, they may notice that the skin on the buttocks (as well as other areas of the body) has become loose and flabbly. This can result in a less than toned and dimpled appearance to the skin. Skin tightening surgery can be performed to produce a better aesthetic. The treatment involves the removal excess skin and the re-draping of the remaining skin to create a smooth and taut appearance.
VelaShape: Many patients have cellulite. Cellulite on the buttocks can make women feel embarrassed to go out in swimwear. Today, cellulite can be effectively treated with VelaShape, a medical treatment that uses radiofrequency, massage, and rollers to minimize cellulite.
